Valley Roots Landscape Design LLC is the proud creation of Kate and Jared Ahlstrom, who collectively hold Bachelor’s degrees in Landscape Architecture and Environmental Planning from Utah State University. They share a passion for the outdoors, the art of design, and have 7 years of practical landscape design field experience.
Their extensive background encompasses a wide range of landscaping roles; including maintenance, design, construction, 3D rendering, seasonal bloom design/planting, and plantscape theory.
Kate hails from the picturesque Ogden Valley, while Jared’s family roots run deep within the same valley – hence the fitting name for their business, Valley Roots.
Their goals when designing spaces transcends mere aesthetics; they aim to craft environments that flourish and thrive.
Our Story
Jared and Kate’s journey began at Utah State University, where they crossed paths in the Landscape Design and Environmental Planning Program. After earning their degrees, they embarked on careers in landscape installation, maintenance, and nurseries – deepening their knowledge and broadening skills.
As they honed their craft and created a holistic design system, a pivotal moment arrived. Faced with the choice of continuing in their familiar roles or taking a leap into entrepreneurship, they made a resolute decision. Thus, Valley Roots was born!
Kate transitioned to part-time, then eventually dedicated herself full-time to building their landscape design business. Fast forward three years, and Valley Roots not only continues to flourish but has also expanded its project footprint, stretching from Bear Lake to Utah County. The scope of services offered by Valley Roots has likewise broadened. Amidst this growth, the Ahlstrom family welcomed a new addition, a baby girl, in 2022.
Jared, while maintaining a full-time position with another company, lends his expertise to Valley Roots whenever possible. The journey of building this business has enriched their lives in myriad ways, and they’re profoundly grateful for the support received from family, friends, and their wonderful clients.

Hello, I’m Kate! I love making people laugh, creating landscapes, and watching them grow. If you ever ask me about my favorite plant, I’ll tell you that there are just too many to choose from, each with its own incredible features. How could I possibly pick just one? But when it comes to creating a plan, I’ve got a treasure trove of great plant choices up my sleeve, all aimed at turning your landscape into something beautiful and functional.
I thrive on problem-solving and take great pleasure in helping others gain confidence in their landscaping projects. When I’m not working, you’ll find me exploring trails, tending to my garden, or whipping up something delicious in my kitchen.
